Battle of the Belts pre-education safety belt check.

September - October
During the six week period between your first and second BOTB safety belt checks, implement an educational blitz with different events to disseminate traffic safety information.

December
Great time to educate your students on drowsy driving, impaired driving, and safety belt usage as they leave campus for winter break.

March
Before students head out for Spring Break, talk to them about impaired and distracted driving and safety belt usage.

May
As the academic year wraps up, use this opportunity to give them a refresher on all traffic safety subjects.

Event Ideas

Activities with Fatal Vision Goggles

Mock Sobriety Checkpoint
Ask the University Police Department to put on a mock sobriety checkpoint while students are wearing the Fatal Vision “beer” goggles.

Obstacle Course
Have students go through a simple obstacle course (weave in and out of cones, throw a ball to another individual, try to catch a ball, etc.) wearing the goggles. Explain to students what impairment level they are wearing, and how drinking impairs your vision.

Golf Cart Obstacle Course
If your campus also has access to a golf cart, set up a driving obstacle course with a simple, set route, again emphasizing the effect drinking has on your vision. This can be combined with a mock sobriety checkpoint.

Purchasing Information
To purchase Fatal Vision Goggles in a variety of impairment levels, go to www.fatalvision.com.

Seatbelt Relay Races
Partner up with a local designated driver program, car dealership, etc., for the use of a car. Have students (in teams of 4) compete with other teams to be the fastest at buckling up in all four seats of the car. Have someone with a stopwatch be the moderator - fastest team wins!

Seatbelt Pledge Drive & Raffle
Encourage students to sign a pledge that they will wear their seatbelts, follow traffic laws and drive without distraction or aggression. Draw a winner from participants for a prize.

Utilization of your golf cart (if available)

Rides to class
Offer students rides to class - with a catch. While en route, ask students questions about driving. They get a ride until they “flunk” -then they have to walk again (similar to the game show “Cash Cab”)

Mobile Tabling
Approach individuals as they are outside in between classes (or while class is in session) with educational information. You can use any of the information you would use at a traditional tabling event, but can get to more people through use of your vehicle.

Tabling Events

Driver’s Exam
Conduct a short “Driver’s Exam” with questions about statistics on driving for Missouri college students.

MoDOT
MoDOT has a good selection of public service announcements on their website - www.savemolives.com - which you could show at a tabling event with educational information corresponding to the message.

Memorial Wall
Build a make-shift wall (i.e. on a display board) where students can add names of friends or loved ones killed in a motor vehicle crash on paper bricks that make up the wall. This could be combined with another DSDS event.

Promotion & Marketing

Posters and Handbills
Put informational handbills on cars - but check with parking and transportation office first to make sure you are allowed to!
Hang posters in dorms, student unions, around shuttle stops, etc.

Mass e-mails
If your campus has a mass e-mail system, you may want to send out an email with driving statistics and other educational information.

Homecoming parade
Have a display/float in your Homecoming parade

Resources from Highway Patrol

Seatbelt Convincer
The Seatbelt Convincer enables a passenger to experience the actual force generated during a low speed collision and the value of the restraint provided by the seat belt. Once passengers experience the force generated during a 5 mph collision, a new respect is gained for the protection that seat belts can provide.

Simulated Impaired Driving Experience (S.I.D.N.E.)
Although it is not available in all areas, S.I.D.N.E. is a battery-powered vehicle that simulates the effects of impairment from alcohol or other drugs on a motorist’s driving skills.

For reservation and availability information, contact the individual below in your Highway Patrol Troop area to reserve the Seatbelt Convincer or S.I.D.N.E. in your community.
